Wedding Decor: Denise & Jared (St Helena, California)

I really enjoy being able to design for weddings beyond the invitation and work on all the little touches that personalize the wedding day itself. Once the wedding invitation was in the mail, there were a bunch of items to make for Denise and Jared’s winery wedding. It was quite the variety, from hand-lettered signage, to favor hang tags. My personal favorite was the bar signs, so much fun (and gold ink)!
Probably the best thing about working on this wedding was being able to make the day beautiful for my friends. I really enjoyed brainstorming with the bride and the groom and bringing back the finished pieces that fit right into their vision for their special day.

I’d been hoping these two would tie the knot for some time now. When they were ready to walk down the aisle, I got to help make their wedding day extra special (and be a guest at their wedding). We started early, working together to build a custom wedding invitation set that tied into their St. Helena vineyard wedding. The final set was so much fun to put together!
I got to have some fun creating the wine glass stains from scratch with watercolors and combining a bunch of different elements the bride and groom liked to create one unique wedding set. My favorite little piece, requested by the bride, is the heart etched into the wine barrel illustration on the back side of the invitation card. So creative!

Another wedding full of personalized items! So glad to have these projects come my way and add some custom pieces to such an exciting day. Congratulations to the Hajdukovics!
A very unique seating chart – each table was designated a different board game, since it’s one of the couple’s favorite pastimes.
Keeping board games in play (ha, see what I did there?), their guestbook was pieces of the Jenga game that guests personalized.

Wedding decorations are always fun, because each couple has different ideas about what touches they want to include at their wedding. For this wedding, there were a bunch of signs to make and a very unique piece shown at the end. I also got to bring out some different skill sets to put all these elements together. Congratulations to the Grohs!
This was the most interesting piece to me – a quilt block. The couple decided to have guests sign a piece of fabric, later to be made into a keepsake quilt, rather than a traditional guest book. I was asked to paint a rose in their wedding colors that would be the centerpiece of the entire quilt, which I was definitely happy to do.

My favorite part about weddings (besides the photography, of course) is how much they can be personalized to fit the bride and groom’s vision for their big day. I absolutely love small touches that make weddings feel unique, and get really excited when I’m the one who gets to create those pieces. Once the wedding invitation calligraphy was finished, Andrea (the bride) and I started discussing other elements for the wedding. She had some projects in mind for the reception and bridal party gifts, and I was more than happy to work on them for her. My absolute favorite project was the seating chart, designed on an old window!

After designing one of my favorite wedding invitations for Shauna and Steve, there were some great ideas for matching items for the wedding ceremony and reception. I designed signs, custom photo booth strips, table numbers, programs, favors and escort cards. My absolute favorite piece was the favors/escort cards. They wanted to do custom Jones Soda labels as their favors, using my engagement photos of them, with tags that would double as escort cards. I letterpressed each card and then added the calligraphy for names and table numbers. They definitely turned out top notch!
Special thanks to Jamie Jones Photography for letting me use the last four photos from the event!

One of my favorite things is to bring a client’s vision to life, to discuss their ideas and then develop designs based only on their ideas. It often will challenge me to produce something that is not my normal style and I really enjoy being stretched creatively. For this bridal shower, the host wanted a theme that is a bit more formal, and simple without being bland. Cream, taupe and rose create an elegant color palette that is enlivened by a geometric design motif. A touch of gold calligraphy ink finishes the set perfectly.

Calligraphy has always been beautiful to me, but it seemed a little too formal, too aloof. In the past couple years, a new style being called “modern calligraphy” has started to make its way into invitation design. I was intrigued from the very beginning and finally decided to take the plunge and learn the skill and make it my own. I’m now proud to offer this as an additional service. Samples I’ve completed are below, I’m looking forward to tackling more extravagant projects as my skills strengthen in the future.

Always a pleasure and challenge to design for people I know, mixing something from their personality into the invitations. This was no different, and I was so happy with the final set that went into the mail. So excited to welcome a sister-in-law into the family!

This wedding invitation came together beautifully. It is definitely the most involved piece I’ve ever had the pleasure to design – letterpress printing, digital printing, handwritten calligraphy, wax seals and mounted photos (from their engagement session) were all just steps in the process to get to the final mailed piece. The bride and groom (friends of mine) also helped during printing and assembly, since the final piece was so complex.
For the design, the bride and the groom defined the style as “retro romantic” and wanted something that fit their wedding location, The Claremont Resort in Berkeley, CA. We ended up with a design that is clean and elegant, with a bit of art deco influence.
